Korchnoi a was a fun guy, I plan on reading his biography someday.

I remember following his Karpov match in the local newspaper. I didn’t know there was a USCF back then. I don’t even know how I eventually found out about them.

I remember seeing a picture of him in the paper training via yoga.

And then there was the yogurt. What a character.

It's very difficult to anoint one player as best of all time, because chess knowledge has evolved over the centuries. All great players of different eras should be admired and studied for what they were able to accomplish in their time.  Anyone here in the 21st century who believes they can't learn something from somebody like Paul Morphy just because he played in the 19th century is a fool.

We can, however, have fun discussing our favorite players. My favorite player is Tal.

Agreed. My personal favourite is Alekhine, mainly because I learned more from playing through his games than those of any other player. Sacrificial attacking style like Tal, but based more on brutal calculation than intuition.

Korchnoi was NOT a fun guy, by all accounts. People respected his chess but he was roundly disliked by most of the other top players, who considered him extremely rude and cantankerous.
