As quantified by name recognition outside of chess circles, probably Fischer.
I think that in most of the world, Kasparov is better known these days.

Searching for ....whom? Never saw a movie about searching for Karpov. Kasparov is next most famous, because of his political activities.

Unanswerable, but if I had to choose, it would be Fischer.

I think Fischer's an obvious shoe-in. In most circles I'd guess Kasparov has more recognition due to the Deep Blue match than his political activities, but I'd guess if you went out onto the street and asked random people to name the first chess player that came to mind you'd find Fischer well out in front.

i initially thought fischer but maybe that's my american thinking. i agree with this. either fischer or kasparov. i wish it was boguljabov. what a name.
