Why do a lot of players let the clock run out?

It's happened too many times even for a nooby like myself. Last game I was literally 1 rook move from checkmate but when it was his turn he just didn't make a move and let the clock run til he timed out.

For some reason, some think that letting the clock run out is somehow better than resigning.  Why?  Who knows...

This is becoming ridiculous, just check my last 5 games... Might even be more than that, each and every one just themselves time out. Is there any way to report or block these players?

Should I just resign? Is it just because I'm a low level or does this still happen at a higher level?

You have a choice:

Report

let it go

I play in school and I need to switch tabs whenever the teacher walks past

Very questionable. If I suspect it's intentional, I'll typically devote the remainder of the game to trash talking and taunting.

Some people are annoyed at having a lost position and don't want to give their opponent the satisfaction of making the final blow. Rather than resign they know it will be more annoying to make their opponent wait. I've been in this position many times and have finally woken up to the fact that time is sooo precious in Chess and is an important front to fight on. When i see it happening i  never get annoyed as i'm now used to it and am genuinely pleased that i won this particular game anyway. Whilst the clock is slooowly running, i open up another Chess.com tab and practice Tactics. A most satisfying feeling i suppose compared to staring at clock that i used to do. Careful to check on the game though in case a move is made! It normally isn't happy.png

I did this one time (letting the clock run out)

And me. Now i just resign which lets us both play more Chess or just get on with both our lives.

It s a kind of cheating, they dont wanna lose the precious ranting points, so they wait foe you to resign. They should get banned. If they have some emergency, then they could just write it in chat, and offer a draw, or resign.

prusswan

It is called off the board tactics

Always report them, I do. Although I don;t think Chess.com cares or does anything.
