Why Do Players Decline Rematch on 3 Min Games, Even When They Win?

Sort:

Seriously. I'd say about 90% of my 3 min random opponents only play one game, and then they're gone. I hit rematch until I have to leave my computer.

Why is this one-game-only practice so common? Is it me? Is there some strategy I'm not aware of?

I'm interested to see what everyone else has to say.

It's personal preference of course, but I have the feeling a lot of folks are just wound so tight that win, lose, or draw, they just want to take a break.  There are about a thousand previous threads on the subject, mostly from folks far less polite than you, demanding their rematch.  I'll get you a link since I'm curious myself how many pages there are...

baddogno

Only 9 pages of threads, thought there'd be more.

I've edited my title to reflect my particular issue. I've gone through 5 of those 9 pages, and I haven't found a thread discussing my issue. There are tonnes of opinions *about* rematches, etiquette and how things should be; I'm interested in ideas about the cause. I can understand there are many reasons to decline a 10 min or longer rematch, but the large majority of players I encounter are refusing rematches on 3 minute games.

Does it bump your rating in practice?

baddogno

Don't see how it could possibly affect your rating.  Of course there are regularly scheduled blitz tournaments, like every day, but I'm not sure about the schedule.  I'll see if I can find the schedule for you.

baddogno

Here you go; the actual schedule is near the end.

OMG thank you so much.

I can't speak for anyone else, but I often try and squeeze "just one" quick game,. Win or lose I'm off. No disrespect to my opponent, but I gotta go!

Bwhaha that's hilarious, like there are all these blitz chess addicts just jonseying for one more game whenever they can happy.png

The typical reasons, why I decline a rematch:

- I don´t have the time

- I want to analyse the other game first

- I need a break after an exciting time scramble

- My opponent has an annoying style of play (e.g he is playing only trick openings and/or is only playing to flag). If I see no scenario, where I might learn something from a blitz game, there is much less incentive to play another game

- He showed some unsportsmanlike behaviour in another fashion

You can analyze your blitz game the same way you analyze your classical games. If the position after the opening is part of your normal repertoire, you can look up, if you played the right move order and chose the right plan.

But obviously this only works, if your opponent also wants to play a somewhat serious game. That is why I dislike playing the typical "blitz specialists" with obscure openings.

That is exactly it. I have one 15 minute break during my work day. That is enough time to walk to the break room, play a 5|0 game, do a quick analysis, then walk back to my desk. I don't have the time for rematches in that time frame.

I think there are many reasons, especially depending on the rating level, but cowardice is a big factor. When it comes to blitz few people really have a time constraint. I've been playing a lot of blitz so my rating has plummeted, so I've seen a lot of people decline rematches when they were losing the whole game, but won on time or a silly blunder. They know they are likely to lose a rematch and cannot stomach the nerves.

" but cowardice is a big factor. "

I keep seeing this idiotic phrase repeated over and over again. Sheer stupidity. Does anyone honestly think that there is a single person on the entire planet quaking with fear over the prospect of confronting the mighty djames7? I rarely even notice my opponents names. much less fear them! Face it guys The reason your opponents don't want a rematch is because they'd rather do something else. They don't fear you, they barely know you exist

PanchoPippin

Yeah I like to analyze my games immediately after and to take a breath, so win//lose/draw I always decline the immediate rematch request

Y0UNGTHUG
I personally only rematch if I’m confident I’m going to win again
DerekDHarvey

I never rematch. Why should I?

Chse0c

Frankly, a three minute game takes a lot of concentration and after a tight battle I am often too mentally tired for an immediate three minute game straight away. No disrespect to one's opponent but they have no right to demand a rematch.
