lol. I think it is because a lot of the people you know are more social people than people that actually play chess. If you look around the site, there are still many people that play chess, it's just that since you are in many groups a lot of the people you know are in many groups.

chesscom is part of staff so it is an account

Yes, it is an account but it isn't a person. When they send out a messages from the site, that account gets used. I imagine some of the staff members have access to the account to do certain things but most of it is back-end and automated and that account is how that ties into everything.

There is a way to send those even if you have never played a game with someone.

I didn't look at those trophies but normally a game trophy links back to the game it was awarded from and I'll bet none of those have that link.
