why is everyone hating on Gukesh?

so Gukesh didn't win a single game in the knockout portion of the Freestyle Grand Slam tournament, and people keep saying that Gukesh is a scam or that he's a fake Word Champion and that his title is a joke, but I don't understand the hate, everyone messes up sometimes, also Gukesh is probably tired from the spotlight after becoming World Champion and after Tata Steel and after Freestyle, he's probably exhausted after all that, and also maybe he's just not as strong in Chess 960 right now. And keep in mind that he's still young and still has plenty of time to improve.

what are your thoughts?

I agree!

tkgfuturestar32

yeah, and Gukesh is not the blitz/rapid guy. He is a calculator.

"People" keep saying that? Like who? Random nameless trolls on the internet?

Timmeh2007

there were some people in the comments on the last article about the freestyle tournament, and a few youtube comments too

AGC-Gambit_YT

I mean, Magnus did not even try to defend his world title, putting an asterisk on Liren's and Gukesh's world chess championships. This is similar to the two championships that Olajuwon won when Jordan was playing baseball. The best was not playing in the world championship. Unfortunately, that's how it goes. No hate to Gukseh though. He just is not Magnus.

This makes absolutely zero sense. Sure, Gukesh didn't defeaat Magnus. He also didn't defeat Anand, Kramnik, Kasparov, Karpov, Fischer, Spassky, Petrosian, Tal, Smyslov, Botvinnik, Euwe, Alekhine, Capablanca, Lasker and Steinitz. And Morphy. And Michael Jordan. What a patzer.

That "asterisk" is only in your head. Best to wake up and realize than Magnus's time is gone.

I believe there is a part of psychological reason in all this (hating Gukesh and/or Liren).

It's not easy to explain or understand, but we'll give it a try.

Let's start from the fact that we "humans" are not world champions, we are not candidates for the title, we are not super-strong players or Super-GMs. That said, we don't like losing, we don't like being beaten. We would like to excel in chess, but we can't. In our condition of people who are beaten, we admire and look at the "top" of the world rankings, understanding and accepting that a person, let's say like Magnus, can beat us.

But Gukesh?

Well, Gukesh is "simply" one of us. Gukesh does not have the highest rating in the world. Gukesh is stronger than us, fine, but he doesn't deserve the title. Only those with the highest ratings in the world deserve the title, right?

Not Gukesh, because he is one of us, and therefore why Gukesh "yes", and us "no"? This is why players like Gukesh and Ding are, and have been, hated when they have become world champions.

It's another form of jealousy, a subtle envy.

IMHO.

What are you on about? I said that Gukesh did not play the best chess player in his era, similar to when Micheal Jordan retired temporarily to play baseball and Olajuwon won those two NBA championships. The asterisk will always be that Gukesh, like Liren and Olajuwon, is that if the best player really was playing, they might not have won.

Nobody can defeat a player who is not playing. It's impossible.

The Dream and his Houston are remembered for winning two championships, and only hardcore Chicago fans imagine an asterisk there.

What Gukesh did is he defeated everyone who stood in his way. Including the world champion.

Also, calling myself a patzer is hilarious considering the fact you have been here for 7 years and have a lower elo than myself, who picked up chess 2 years ago.

1. I never called you a patzer.

2. I don't have a lower Elo than you in any format.

Other than that, good job.

PennsylvanianDude

I meant rapid but you don't even play rapid.

You called me a patzer here, I believe.
