Why Magnus Carlsen is so overrated?

Carlsen is a lucky champion ,   do you remember the way he won the candidates?  In the penultimate round, he could not win to Radjabov, the position it was an easy draw ( a draw= kramnik win ) ,and then suddenly  Radjabov make strange moves and he loses! .

He lost the last round too vs Svidler   like an amateur he lost the nerve where a real champion (like karpov,kasparov,federer...)  show to the world they are the best in his sport , no more tricks,  win by K.O  . Carlsen victories are Pyrrhic and hollow.

if just only kramnik had make draw vs Ivanchuk , Bye Bye Carlsen . HAHA but this guy is too lucky. Kramnik lost with a Pirc !!!  it was surreal watch kramnik played that opening .

Carlsen was frightened too in the second match vs Vishy,  he made the blunder greatest of all time but then luckily for him,  over and over again, he was lucky and his opponent failed and blunder too!!."

OK, Carlsen was lucky in the Candidates he won.  And lucky in one game vs Anand.

But he defeated Anand 6 wins to 1 over 2 12 game matches.  He has consistently held the No 1 rating for, what?, 5 years, often by a long way.

These things do not happen by chance.  And an ELO rating isn't someone's opinion, they are calculated.

I used to think Carlsen was kind of weak and underwhelming. So I did some statistical research to prove how much better Kasporav was. It turns out I "proved" the opposite.

I can dig up exact numbers if people want to hear them:

- Carlsen in his prime now loses less games, by percentage, than Kasporav did in his years as word champion.

- Carlsen's "disastor 2015" is not as bad as 2 - 3 Kasporav years in terms of W/D/L score. If you are curious, I will find which years these are.

- Carlsen has less draws than Kasporav, and Kasporav is actually objectively more drawish.

This was very eye opening for me, and maybe if other people saw the hard statistics they would be more open minded to accept that Carlsen deserves his rating and his spot as world champion.

One of Karolsson's predecessors.

Sensible comments xman.

I think Carlsen draws ire because he tends to win mostly w/o sacrificial attacks.

I have heard him called an endgame specialist, but I don't agree.  He is way too good in other phases of the game for such a description to be accurate.

Scary thing is, a player like Nakamura would be called an aggressive, attacking, tactical player.  But I don't think he is any better in attack or tactics than Carlsen.

xman, do you know how Carlsen's tournament record compares with Karpov's?  Kasparov said in one of his books Karpov has the best tournament record ever.

Yes, I'm sure this would convince the OP, and there would be no more anti-Carlsen threads

Ok since I m bad at chess I will let you do the honours in explaining why Wei Yi didn't beat Adams in the Wijk Ann Zee... He should of won. White s rook was in a terrible position!

I would like YOU explaining us how Wei could have won against Adams, since I have looked at the game for quite a while, and I'm too dumb to find out. "His rook was in a terrible position" does not count as an adequate answer.

Having a bad rook isn't enough of a disadvantage to lose when you're a super GM. And his rook wasn't even that useless.

Much like the Hou - So game in round 2. My engine says it's a winning advantage. My beginner logic is that "white is up a pawn"

Don't ask me how to win though!

How to win, binary digit dude?

The Hou - So game? An obvious draw.

I've only glanced at the Adams - Wei game, and I'm obviously not a pro, but first impression is it looks like a simple draw too.

If it were my game, I'd be confident of a draw once it got to the R+N endgame. Adams is super tough too, so it's hard to imagine him losing it.

Although again, I'm just glancing at it.
