Why Magnus Carlsen is so overrated?

About rating inflation.

Vishy was 2769 in 2000 and is 2784 today.

Has he improved? Or has he lost something? Maybe both?

I dont have a clue. Was he better then or now?

Maybe the toprating 2817 from 2011 describes his strongest time?

I tried to check MC's move against Stockfish 7 at 4sec/pos, for all 13 games in TataSteel 2016. Calculate its average centipawn loss per game and its overall average centipawn loss. When MC's move matches to that of Stockfish, centipawn loss is set to 0. Otherwise centipawn loss is equal to stockfish's bestmove evaluation minus MC's move evaluation by stockfish.

Carlsen,M average centipawn loss summary:

Overal average centipawn loss: 4

With this kind of play, it will be very difficult to defeat him.

Anand definitely improved since 2000. He became the World Champion and faced Carlsen twice in matches.

He's currently on a downward slide. In fact, his recent losses in Gibraltar are a classic harbinger that he may be overrated. When an older elite player starts losing to much lower rated players, it's often a sign that he will no longer be competitive as a candidate.

Nibbler007

Sure, but as far as im aware Anand is #12 in the Live Ratings, after his lackluster performance in Gibraltear, no?
Punctual ratings dont work so well for a real evaluation of a players strength in my opinion, since theyre highly dependant on form, and form of opponents. I'm just arguing that if u just judge the quality of the moves, games played at the highest level today are objectively better, mainly because of better opening preparation and training with computers. Whether the likes of Keres, Geller, and so on were just as strong individually at later stages of the game is irrelevant, objectively the guys today are making stronger moves. Why should rating not reflect that?

I think a better question is "How is Magnus Carlsen so overpowered" ?

He is not only overrated, he is a coward. He hasn't played vs anybody higher rated than him since he was a teenager.Cool

Nobody is rated higher than he is.

Yup, he's a coward. He only enters tournaments where he's the highest rated player. What a chicken!

Worst attempt at a joke

Come on - it's not that bad. It's not the most original joke, but as far as jokes go it's decent.

Some people didn't initially realise what awfulhangover was saying, which is why they didn't like the joke.

I'm confused. I've been out of the loop since Gata Kamsky and the Polgar sisters, but ahhhh...is this Magnus fellow of a certain persuasion? I looked for info about him and found this image. I don't want to glorify individuals who crave, well...you know.

Magnus is a superstar and photomodel, and he is running his own chessbusiness. I think he is doing everything fine, even though giving that peacocklook in this image. Because of his activities he has been able to build a sound economy which have made him able to buy a large house in Oslo where he arranges trainingcamps, and in these camps he hires great GM´s to help and gives back something to his local friends in the Norwegian national team. He is a true chessplayer, and makes enough money to be generous. Rich generous people are rare, because most of the rich have became rich because they never are generous.

Charles 008 -

Now I am confused. "Certain persuasion" ?? Crawes what ??

If you are hinting (my best guess) that he is gay who the fuck cares, it is his chess we are interested about not his sexual preferances...

Here is a pic of Carlsen when he was 13, He and Kasparov came to a draw.

That's actually pretty common.  Most chess prodigies are doing 5-10 game blind simuls by the age of 10-15.  It's impressive, VERY amazing, but not all that rare.

earthdragon689

Agreed :)
