I think it could be very fun and interesting to make a variant in which players, before the game, are allowed (forced) to switch any major piece with any other major piece. This would essentially eliminate theory and make all potential games much more dynamic. My initial thought was to have "only black" able to do this, as compensation for white getting to move first, but it might be more fun for both parties to be able to do so. This is obviously a very simple idea, but I feel it would prove quite interesting to content creators and high level players.
