Are there rating or, membership minimum requirements to play variant chess.

I have been attempting to play the variants.  I have played atomic, king of the hill, and giveaway.  While looking at my stats, I came across info that said I was observing?  I was playing to the best of my knowledge.  Please enlighten me of Chess.com brains.

Kev,

If you were in an arena, you could both play and be observing in between games. I'd probably have to watch you do it to be sure what was going on though.
