If you can can explode the enemy king, then checks and checkmates don't matter.
Explosion >> Checkmate
Atomic chess has lots of little quirks like this, which forces you play postionally (to avoid any tactics). That's why I love it!
Atomic Chess Issue

On atomic chess (reachable in the "more variants" tab, you normally are able to checkmate someone even if your in check. This works well if you can take a piece but you can't do a normal checkmate if you're in check, in a game a person went QD8 and I had my queen lined up on their king, the game wouldn't let me move the chess piece on top of the king while it was stuck in a corner which would've been checkmate.
