Can someone please explain the moves of the grasshopper in the Amazon Forest variant?

I have played the Amazon Forest variant many times now, and I like it, but there is one thing especially that I cannot figure out and that is:  What allows for the grasshopper to sometimes make certain moves and other times not?  It seems that the grasshopper can often move two squares (like a bishop or like a rook) and that he can hop over other pieces, but sometimes he can jump several squares.  I have never seen him move to an adjacent square.  Can someone please explain the rules of how the grasshopper can move?  I presume he cannot move into check, and that he can usually jump over one square like a rook or a bishop (most of the time), but I just checkmated a grasshopper and I thought he had a move, but apparently he didn't...  At other times, I thought I had him, and he made a long jump somewhere.  It is somewhat disconcerting to not understand that piece's movements completely, but after searching high and low, I cannot find this information.  PLEASE HELP !!!

Hi. I was having the same question since starting to play this game variant some days ago, and couldn´t find one single article that explained the pieces and their movements (neither within chess.com nor on the internet).

However, fiddling around after a match, just now, I stumbled upon the option "edit position". There, there´s a button called "fairy pieces" (a horse with a crown), which displays all the pieces of Amazon Jungle variant and many more. If you hover you cursor over the pieces, the system shows a brief description of their movements.

By the way, I came across your question via internet; not via chess.com. That is how weird things are among chess.com extra game variants so far.

Edit: I´m learning to navigate through chess.com forum as I do this research. After some more researching, I found some articles at the forum about the grasshopper. If you type "amazon grasshopper" in the forum topics search box, you´ll have currently seven topics. The first one that describes the piece is from Feb. 2021, by the player 26rchen.
PS: note that you created a topic with the term "forest" instead of "jungle" (which is the term adopted by chess.com)
