To my knowledge there is no general Chess Variant Association, although I would not be surprised if there are some local clubs in various cities. There are some clubs at this website for some specific variants. I'm a member of these:

If you include pawns, I don't think I'm down in material, or at least not by much. But of course the value of some pieces is uncertain.
