never start going to the middle early, develop, exchange, and when you feel he has little guarding pieces, go to the middle.

From what I've experienced with koth, it seems as your opponent is going to discourage your king from moving to the target centre by threatening it with checkmate. It can actually be harder than standard code when your opponent knows how to play this code with tactics. I guess it's a matter of studying how to eliminate the pieces on the board with other pieces first? But what would I know?
At the start play it like a normal game, you do not want to get mated.
