I once designed a piece that I called a Terror. It could move like a Queen, but also jump to any square two King steps away (so as a Knight or on the Queen rays), for capturing or moving. And finally it would be able to perform hit & run capture on adjacent squares, capturing an enemy that was there, but then leave that square again in the same turn by making a King step to an empty square (including the square it came from).
You need such strong pieces to make large variants interesting (this was for a game on a 14x14 board with 56 pieces per player); without this these would quickly degenerate to a very tedious battle between slowly moving and weak pieces. So I had added the rule that Terrors could not capture each other, to prolong their presence in the game, and give them the opportunity to slaughter the weak pieces at high rate.
