IIRC there is a chess variant where pieces can combine and replicate to make completely novel pieces midway through the game. So they sort of have a genome if you will. I have never played it though and I forget the name.

Mutation could also be a factor. The horse mutates into a rook or a cow, etc...

maybe Civilization or CK2? I'm imagining the chess pieces are now developing artillery through the bishop tech tree
