Event #43 Line Pushers

As a move a rook can force all pieces on the same file as the rook (friend and foe) to move one step along that file. The rook can also do the same with all pieces on the same rank, but then the pieces need to move one step along that rank.

No captures can be made when pieces are moved by the rook this way. If a piece can not move because it is standing next to a piece or at the edge of the board, then they will stand still instead.

If the move would result in the rook not moving, then the move is not legal (the rook must move)

If a piece reaches a promotional square when being moved by a rook, that piece will not promote. However, that piece can spend one move to stand still on the promotion square to promote.

Pawns on the first or second rank can move up to 2 squares forward regardless if they have previously moved or not.

Example 1:

Whites rook can force all pieces on the 4th rank to move one step left.

Or all pieces on the 4th rank move one step right.

Or all pieces on the d-file to move one step up.

Or all pieces on the d-file to move one step down.

However, other combinations, such as trying to move all pieces on the d-file one step to the right is not legal.

Example 2:

White can force all pieces on the a-file to move one step up.

Note then the black rook, black pawn and white bishop did not move, since they were either at the edge of the board or blocked by another piece.

Example 3:

White plays 1.RaUP

Whites pawn will not promote, but white is able to play a8=Q later if he wants to.

Game continues: 1...a2 2.RaUP a2 3.RaUP a2 4.RaUP a2

Now white can not play RaUP, since it would not cause whites rook to move. Instead white plays 5.RaDOWN.

Similarly, to whites pawn earlier, blacks pawn on a1 will not promote, but black is able to play a1=Q later. In fact, black can play 5...a1=Q directly.

One part of me wants to play the aesthetically pleasing Be6 here. But I'm not going to.
