Martin vs the world analysis thread #4

I think we should go d4.

Chess_Pro2

I agree that the Scandinavian would be bad to play as black. I also agree that we should almost certainly not invite the Nimzo-Indian. The only time I'd consider inviting it is if at least 1 event has been started by that time. The Nimzo-Indian seems very risky, since we don't know if bishops or knights will be better when the events start.

For example against 1. d4 Nf6 2. c4 e6 I'd suggest 3. Nf3 instead of 3. Nc3.

I actually might go so far as to say we should play Nf3 instead of c4! Or at least, we should wait to play it, so we don't have to worry about Bb4+ in an event.

I still like the idea of an Event before the first move.  You can't get any more Event Chess than that, AND then we make our best move based on that… so a strong beginning.

I bet Martin would counter with him declaring an Event before his first move, and then — suddenly — we have an Event Chess game for the ages, with things being as bizarre as they can get, start to finish, and forget about traditional chess.

It could be a great game that would be looked back upon as Martin threw the World a "bone" (a peace offering, compensating for the prior game's wretchedness, by allowing us to go first) and the World took the bone, played with it — showing it off — ran with it, Martin then joined chase, and suddenly Event Chess was on the map, so to speak.

By the way, if we get too lucky with the events, and have an immediate win, we should definitely offer a draw.

It's a chess variant that is like normal chess, except both players can choose to start a so called event at some point during the game (before 3 non-pawn pieces have been captured). This event will modify the rules of the game in some way, When a player chooses to start an event, an event from a list of over 100 events is chosen at random.

A lot of the time the events will modify how pieces move. For example there's an event that allows pieces to occupy multiple squares and there's an event that makes the queen royal instead of the king (so that you can check/checkmate a queen). Since both players can start an event the game will eventually become a combination of 2 events.

You can read about the details here: https://www.chess.com/blog/Martin0/event-chess

You guys are being too calculating, and too cautious.  Show a little moxie after Martin bailed us out last game.

Go for the Event first, and bump this thread into the stratosphere!!!!!!!!!!

The whole World is watching we few who represent the World.  Step up and make it happen!

Vote Event before first move.

We're already on move 2

Well, it's move 1 with Martin yet to move. Not sure why's he's taking his time, perhaps he's studying openings. Or even considering starting an event.

Just like we should have done… YOLO!

Just noticed ry's post.  Originally he made the move on Match #3.

Tja_05

I want a fun game. That's literally it.

captaintugwash

I want to win.

Let’s go c4 this time

Chess_Pro2

Yeah I vote 2. c4.

Although I can't really come up with a reason why 2. c4 would be better than 2. Nf3. But we haven't played 2. c4 against Martin before and it could lead to a different game. Also 2. c4 is what I would play here in regular chess.

I don't think we need to play 2. Nf3 just to avoid checks on b4. I don't think we need to be afraid of the Bogo-Indian (2. c4 e6 3. Nf3 Bb4+). 4. Bd2 should be just fine against it (offering an exchange of bishops). I don't think a single check on b4 would be that dangerous, even if Martin started an event (unless there's some crazy event I'm not aware of). But with some deadly combination of 2 events it might be dangerous. We could just wait with starting an event.

I don't see anything wrong with 2. Nf3 and it could transpose to the main line KID if we play c4 on the next move after 2...g6.

dax00

We shouldn't play afraid of checks, pins, events, etc.. What comes comes.

My vote is for c4.

One more vote and I do it
