What happens if you can't make any moves (a draw in regular chess)?

Here's my new idea for a chess game mode, name pending -- I'd like some feedback and ideas on it.
Position: Pieces start in the same position as regular chess.
Objective: Get your king to the opposite end of the board.
Most rules of chess apply
Exceptions:
Once your king reaches the end of the board, the game is won.
If your king is checkmated, the king goes back to the starting position or the nearest open square on the first rank (white) or the eighth rank (black).
If your king is checkmated on the rank where you started, you lose the game.
