New Variant Idea: Chess 13

This is a dice chess variant in which the current defender (the player not moving) rolls one twenty-sided die immediately after the moving player completes a capture (if any). On a die result of “13” the capturing piece is also captured (i.e., both pieces are lost). All other standard rules remain, except for one: If a king conducts a capture and is lost to the 13 result, that counts as an instant checkmate.

So far local players have liked this. The 5% chance of losing the attacking piece discretely changes things in interesting ways. It introduces uncertainty while keeping intact all of the basic elements of what makes the game so hugely popular.

The concept of “preparation” is opened up substantially because every possible series of moves now only has a 95% chance of succeeding (per move). Interestingly, those odds affect different players in different ways.

and by "attacking piece" do you mean "moving piece"

and how do the odds affect players in different ways?

psychologically, or do some people just get worse luck or what?

is this luck based on playstyle? (maybe one playstyle is affected less)

It is a game of skill and chance. Skill includes the ability to deal with chance.

I intended to say "capturing piece" but forgot to edit that part. Yes, moving (capturing) piece.

Play style will possibly be affected, but different is not bad, it is just different as in real life. My experience is that over the course of time, the die roll results among players always average out. One change in dynamics I have considered is that the capture of much lower value pieces becomes a higher risk action, which slightly empowers those pieces (theoretically by 5%). I think assertive players will not be put off by this and - again as in real life - will just consider that as part of the risk of forward movement.

The odds are slight, and can be adjusted downward if 5% is considered too onerous. For example, players could use two six-sided dice and lose a capturing piece on a 12 result (Chess 12 ?) which would give a 2.78% chance of mutual capture.

I have considered that the game may give too much of an advantage to defensive players, who will then just dig-in and refuse to make captures, hoping the odds slowly move in their favor. We have not been able to do enough playtesting to conclude that yet. One reason I posted the idea here is to hopefully get that input. But one thing both chess and other games share is that in order to win, one must usually attack. I will be curious to see if that carries through to Chess 13. Possibly this could also serve as a balance for black moving second?

Too simple.

If you really want to incorporate luck into a game of chess, why not go all in?

Add an unique outcome for every roll.

but still, there must be chess players who are put off by the little bit of luck
