New Variant Idea: Weak Chess

So the premise for this game is that all the pieces are much weaker.

It's set up like a normal board.

but all the pieces are weaker.

Weak pawn:

it's the same as a regular pawn, except for two things:
- it cannot move two squares (and by extension, cannot en passant) 
- it can only promote to rook, knight and bishop. 
Weak knight:
it's the same as a regular knight, except for one thing:
-it cannot jump over pieces. this means that 
is not possible.
However, if there is any possible way for the knight to get to the square it wants to get to without jumping, then it is allowed. this means that even in this ridiculous position, the knight can still get to d4, because there's a way for that to happen without the knight jumping.
Weak bishop:
it's the same as a regular bishop, except for two things:
-if it's a black bishop, it cannot be on b7 or g7, if it's a white bishop, it can't be on b2 or g2.
-it cannot move more than three squares of distance each turn. 
Weak rook:
-can only move 3 squares of distance each turn

Weak queen:

just weak bishop+weak rook.

Weak king:

it's the same as a regular king, except for two things:

Cannot castle. Can only capture once every five moves. (this doesn't mean only on move 5, 10, 15, 20, etc, just means that there must be five moves in between every capture.

So there's mate if queen is next to king without protecting, if king did a capture less than 5 moves ago, there's no piece that can eat queen and if king can't escape. Right ?

good except i dont like that the bishops cant be on b2/g6 and b6/g2 like whats the point of that

if its bc of fianchettoing, not really a problem, since fianchettos are nerfed serverely by the 3 square limit

the rule just seems odd

I like the short bishop and rook capacities; just three spaces is appropriately weakened. I am also confused by the restriction on bishops on b2/g6/etc. Laughing a bit about the bizarre circumnavigation that the knight is allowed to take to get to a space. That seems bonkers.

yeah the knight is pretty absurd. the space restrictions on bishops is to prevent fianchettoing, which makes the bishop powerful.

kind of yeah. although some pieces have weaknesses that chatrang doesnt have.

What about making the knight really weak, able to do any L-shaped maneuver as long as it doesn't have to jump a piece?

This seems like the game would become much more positional and take longer to play a game.

The concept of this is similar to chaturanga, actually. In chaturanga, pawns only move one square, bishops are replaced with elephants, and the queen is replaced with a ferz.

The rooks are dabbabas, which can hop two spaces horizontally or vertically. The bishops are alfils, which hop two spaces diagonally. The queen is an alibaba, which combines the dabbaba and alfil, and the knight is a qiangi knight, which can't hop over a piece which is directly next to it horizontally or vertically. There's no castling, and pawns only move one space.
