Although it is ok, it does make the game a lot less interesting if you are just going to lost a pawn(or a piece) in the opening...
This is very cool. When an obstacle is captured it disappears and becomes available space for both players, right? So the playing area would mostly be contiguous, although a knight can punch unconnected holes (if it wanted to).
We'd have to disallow the king capturing obstacles, or it could just run forever creating a path.
Good thinking... Even a queen cannot check a fleeing king. The king can run zig-zag, so even the queen can advance only one square at a time.

That is correct I get feeling too there won't be many punch holes either before endgame, we'll see. It is a lot more difficult to trap pieces as they have an escape.
