The Superclassical Charter

Slow chess immediately faces the following political problems:

  • Even truly fast (up to 35 minutes for a 60 move [61 with increments] game) Freestyle currently struggles for the acceptance of the major GMs (2600+).

  • Players are likely to be this lazy with even Placement Chess since it still inserts no new material.

  • Since the World Champion José Raúl Capablanca promoted the knighted rook and knighted bishop, these pieces are accepted as virtual absolutes.

To all who hold it self-evidently true that this Capablanca absolutism is a fragile principle for slow chess moving forward, we meet as family.

Declaration 1: Under the sovereignty of the FIDE Laws, a Superclassical set shall replace no legal chess piece.

Declaration 2:

Clause 1: Any piece added to constitute such a set shall conform to the 16 legal directions of movement in addition to the new directions it may add.

Clause 2: The same piece(s) shall be added to each player’s army.

Clause 3: The supersession of castling or en passant by the existence of this piece shall be granted as artistic license.

Clause 4: Noting the existence of this piece in Superclassical scoring shall likewise be encouraged.

Declaration 3: Any vertical space added to a Superclassical board should be considered to be added behind the pawns when it can be so considered.
