forequeen of chess with different armies
What new piece can you substitute for one army's queen, that keeps the game balanced?
RN compound is about 0.5 Pawn weaker than Queen. So not really balanced.
BNN would be way too strong. BN is already only 0.75 Pawn weaker than Queen, and the distant Nightrider moves add certainly more than that. (Difference between Knight and Knightrider is about 2 Pawns.)
KNAD is worth about 11.5 Pawns (when Q=9.5). Taking away 4 of its moves would probably balance it quite well.
I never tested an Immobilizer. But I did test a pieces that was a non-capturing KNAD, which would only suppress captures of adjacent enemies, and this was worth about 7 Pawns. An Immobilizer would surely be much stronger.
I never tried an Advancer or a Dwarf.
A weird piece I once tested, and happened to perfectly balance a Queen was Q3AD: a Queen limited to making 3 steps, which could leap directly to the second square. (But could not move to the 3rd square if the 1st was occupied.)
I don't know any piece that can replace the queen in its current state. Maybe we can change how the royal pieces move. The queen moves like a knight but captures like a bishop but the king moves like a knight but captures like a rook. I do not know if this work, but if you know something, let me know in the comments.
I've been looking through some of the forums where people try to develop new kinds of pieces, and am wondering which ones of those can simply be swapped with a queen to still get a balanced game.
In order of standard to weird, what do you think about -
1. Rook-Knight compound - I think people say this is just slightly less powerful than a queen?
2. Bishop-Knightrider compound - people say this is quite equivalent
3. A piece that can jump to any square within two squares (King + Knight + Alfil + Dabbabah)
4. King-Advancer compound - An advancer is weaker than a queen, but a pushme-pullyu is a bit too strong in comparison I think?
5. A bulldog chess Dwarf?
6. Ultima Immobilizer?

Does anyone have any other suggestions? Also, how weird can you go but still remain balanced?
