Best / Worst 960 starting positions

White is ahead +1.0 according stockfish.

glider1001

That is an illegal 960 position. King has to be between the rooks just like normal chess, positions mirrored and bishops on opposite colours. White has a winning game here even before it has started (don't need stockfish for that). Rooks connected and already deployed in the center firing at the king and queen is unfair.

Agree with glider.  Chess 960 doesn't allow for this position.

This could be a transcendental chess or an auction transcendental chess or a Moab chess starting position.

See:https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Transcendental_chess

(I don't recommend D-chess which I think is a flawed idea.)

960Stems

I just came here to announce that "960 Stems," the first single-volume opening reference for Chess960, has been published and is on sale for $9.60 (they banned me twice this week then I got an e-mail saying I was welcome back but still banned I'm here to just spread the word once so please do whatever with the ifno).  9c0 is written in the tradition of the great single-volume references of "518" traditional chess (the other names I have for it are not printable).

As for which starting positions are the most lopsided, 868 is a good place to start.  Anything with the "knight hop" threat to an undefended pawn will amplify White's extra tempo and force Black to do something else that weakens his position (which I explain in the book).  What's interesting are the positions that are lopsided the other way, where Black has equality at move one.  Perhaps that should become the new "chess."

There is a ton of new 960 theory that I have uncovered with engines, and a lot of it refutes commonly held beliefs about "518" chess.  While some 960 positions reward creativity, most reward the player who simply knows what the purpose of the opening is, and it's a lot simpler than people realize.

I'm sure this post will be gone soon.  The book is part of a chess library (two books for now) that includes my old book "Fine Art of the Miniature."  I'll be adding to this over time and launching D9CF, my Chess960 federation.

I'll also be hiring people, but hey they don't want to let me talk.  Bye!

960 isn't chess

Ziggyblitz

No, it's Chess960.

Bilbo21

It isn't chess.

BlargDragon

It's Chess960. It's a chess variant.

Bilbo21

It isn't chess.

BlargDragon

That would be why it's in this forum, for chess variants.

Bilbo21

not for chess.  because 960 isn't chess.

The only difference with chess is the starting position to eliminate opening theory memorization. It is the evolution of chess.

The future of top level chess is boring drawfests between awesome 2800+ players. And totally ridiculous rapid games.

Rapid time controls are the devolution of chess. 960chess is the future I believe.

Chess 960 (Fisher CHESS) is chess, because it has the same rules like chess

Another-Life

Yes, the only thing that changes is the starting position, nothing else.

It isn't chess.  I rest my case.

Would you support Chess960's exit from Chess.com?

Bilbo21

Chexit, I like it!

Chess is a subset of chess960.

Hahaha I hadn't thought about it that way!

Chess is a game where a mediocre player that has studied opening books can get to the middlegame with an equal position as Black versus a GM. Try doing that in 960.
