Basically, I started by going on-line for inspiration, and learn many dwarves wear helmets (the "badass" ones). Then I make an abstract outline - larger than chess piece size. Then add background colors to match board, then add hand-made gradient inside the piece (to match style of other pieces). Then shrink the image to match board square (usually = 75 x 75 pixels).
This is an interesting game and I hope to watch some of it. But you're playing fast (by correspondence standards) and these are strong pieces - I'll have trouble to understand what's going on!
