If staff have given the go-ahead there's no reason why these threads shouldn't persist. I've made it clear-cut that I'm not the biggest fan of these threads coming and going at such a pace. But the people who make the rounds here now are the 'new blood' of this forum (for lack of a better term). So, this is how the forum is. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
It's not really my issue to talk about, but I do want to put forward another suggestion that might be of interest:
E. Use a Discord server for more active discussion.
Now, just in case you don't know what Discord is, it's essentially a gamer-oriented IRC+Skype. You have channels for text, channels for VoIP. You can assign roles that can have varying rights, which makes things more complex than just a simple IRC application. So, you have a main channel to talk about variants in general, and different text channels that can be accessed only by users with a corresponding role. One for each unique variant. And if people really want, they can talk about variants over voicechat. But VC is not really an integral part of using Discord so it's entirely optional. The format in which information is shared over Discord (or, how things are posted) is much faster than a forum, so it's an ideal platform for discussing variants, ideas for variants, theory, the list goes on.
I'm part of a different server for abstract strategy games, and the system they have going on over there is fantastic for discussion; which is primarily why I thought I'd propose something similar here.
Look, I run a forum ESPECIALLY FOR PLAYING CHESS VARIANTS!

That's the person I was talking about.
