Chess 960 Live chess?

Thanks for the recommendation SerjV,  I've been playing over the past few weeks and can definitely say I'm moving over to lichess

Ah... there isn't live 960 here, that explains all the difficulties I had trying to figure out how to play live 960 here.

Yeah it's totally bogus.  chess.com staff hasn't offered a response in years. Lichess has your back though.   They offer free analysis as well. You might have to wait like 30 seconds for a game because there's not as many members, but it's worth it to play live 960.

My rating on lichess about 1230 Cry. This is a real reflection of my ability to play live chess 960

I would also like to see it in live section. Unfortunately, it still wouldn't keep players from cheating. Might take them a couple of minutes to set up the position using an engine.

Keep in mind that almost all the chess960 servers around the world are butchering Chess960 at the moment.....

By not starting white's clock ticking at the start of the game, white get's an advantage.

The butchering of Chess960 is that most of the server databases around the world will be almost useless for statistical purposes because the win/loss ratio for the colours will be skewed by the ignorant chess clock implementation.

It's a remnant from standard chess where it doesn't matter if the clock is not ticking at move one because both sides have already prememorised plans.

So if you are playing as black on any of these servers like lichess or chesscube, don't take it too badly if you loose. It's currently biased towards white winning because white can sit there at move 1 and think all day without time penalty. Then it is black's turn and their first turn IS under time penalty. Problem is that black cannot plan for all white's possible first moves while the clock is still, while white can.

The problem with starting the clock right away is that connections are not always simotaniouse.  There is a pretty simple solution for this, that dosn't penilize white if his connection is a little slower than black.  Simply blank out the board until white clicks a start button, at which point the board is revealed to both players and white's clock starts.

It would be great to have live chess 960 at chess.com.  I have tried playing it on other sites, and while I still do, I do not like the formats and setups as much as I do the ones here.  Thanks for working on it!

I'd love to play Chess960 on Live chess. I support this idea Smile

With the increasing help from computers in standard chess, Fischer Random will be great, please introduce it to live chess.

Avatar of Rebro

How has this not been done yet?

Avatar of letsgohome

Yes please brah. It will only strengthen the community, since players will be force to play unconventional lines.

lichess.org, chesscube, FICS, probably ICC.  The list of servers who already have a thriving fischer random community is endless.

Avatar of Rebro

Yeah but why wouldn't THIS ONE?? The community has been asking for 4 years and no response?? Maybe the administration isn't as smart as they think for a bunch of chess masters?

Their live codebase is probably such a bloated mess that it would take a ton of work to implement.    And chess.com usually prioritizes the lowest common denominator not the enthusiast minority.  That's why they spend so much time working on social elements of the site and so much effort enforcing a "friendly environment" to the extent that you can't even talk about politics unless you are in a special group for it.

Their market is very broad but they have always emphasized kids and families above all else.  When they changed over to the new UI you could tell they wanted a casual, easy design with lots of drop-down menus and big buttons.  I think they gathered much inspiration from facebook with the layout.

I too have been at chess.com off and on for several years and have been in the same forums asking for fischer random the whole time to no avail.  There is simply too many other ideas in motion to bother with chess variants I guess.  It reminds me of when Nintendo refused MLG the right to stream the Super Smash Brothers Melee tournament they were going to hold.  "We wanna avoid a situation where.. it's only appreciated by a very small, passionate group of sort of maniac players." -Sakurai
There was such a outcry about it that they reversed the decision.

Luckily to my knowledge chess.com hasn't done anything downright mean like that but I speculate the reason they don't care about variants is similiar.  They simply aren't all that interested in attracting hardcore players that do nerdy things like play chess variants.  Of course they want titled players because a lot of people think "If a GM uses it, it must be pretty good".  But even then, compared to other servers, chess.com seems a little short on titles.

Somebody should organize a petition and alert chess.com about it or something, because this is obviously a good idea that people want and there's no reason it shouldn't be in place already.

Avatar of egdodnoj

They know people want it.  They have been saying they are going to add live 960 and Bug House for a long time.  My guess is they are planning on adding it along with the big grand new site design they've been talking about, which I'm pretty sure will be done some time before the turn of the century.
