No need for that. I'm well aware.
Chess960 Analogies

Once a guy asked me if I fancied a game of 960. My answer: "I play chess to escape from madness, not to embrace it".
It's fairly common that a negative comparison is from someone who hasn't played chess960, but I reworked the thought into the proposed format...
'Chess is to chess960 as escaping madness is to embracing madness'
...It's almost poetic! Since it's also common to equate chess and madness, I reworked the thought into something less emotional...
'Chess is to chess960 as escaping complexity is to embracing complexity'
...That isn't fair to chess, but since the thread has already succumbed to madness, it hardly matters. - Mark

Remove the madness and there are four posts remaining.
Four is good; five is better. Yesterday I realized that I mistated the original proposition. Better would have been...
'Chess openings are to chess960 openings as ... is to ...'
...since the two converge in the middlegame and are identical in the endgame. - Mark

chess is to 960 as batman is to robin
No, that doesn't work on any level. If you want superheros, how about...
'Chess is to chess960 as Wonder Woman is to the Justice League of America'
...That works on many levels. - Mark

In my opinion, the main analogy is that in Chess960 castling puts the kings in the very same squares as Standard Chess, so you may consider that after castling Chess960 is a normal game of Standard Chess.
The Chess960 mess is in the opening stage (obvious) because you can't count on any book-written moves. This means that in a Chess960 game you're supposed to work out your desirable set-up squeezing your brain move by move in the opening stage as well as in the rest of the game.
People who don't have time or will to build up their own Standard Chess opening repertoire often try Chess960, and it's funny how Chess960 helped me in finding out my own opening guidelines taste and choosing my Standard Chess opening repertoire.
This is my version of the thing. I hope this helps.
EDIT
Sorry, I took your thread too seriously...

No problem; you can take it any way you like. That's the beauty of verbal analogies.
Re 'it's funny how chess960 helped me in finding out my own opening guidelines taste and choosing my standard chess opening repertoire', that's an interesting thought. Can you give an example? - Mark

I was an e4 player by principle. Now I play exclusively d4, because after trying chess960 I understood that I prefer to move my pieces only to squares where they are already protected. GMs don't follow weird rules like this one, but why can't I? The important thig is I enjoy the game, what else is there?

After trying chess960 I understood that I prefer to move my pieces only to squares where they are already protected.
Yes, I understand. When we play chess openings, we learn what other players have already discovered. When we play chess960 openings, we have to figure things out for ourselves. Turning this into an analogy...
'Chess openings are to chess960 openings as the beaten path is to the road not taken'
...For my part, I have a better appreciation for the chess move 1.Nf3 thanks to chess960. - Mark
