You just have to talk to the pawns and ask each one which it is. If the a-pawn says he's Garry, you know he usually belongs on the g-file.

I talk to mine politely, most of the time. But occasionally I say "Die, you stupid pawn!" And then it usually does.
Charlie the c pawn has always been my little buddy
Fred is pretty much useless.
