Event #93 Takebacks

A player can choose to take back their opponents previous move. Then the opponent needs to make a different legal move. A take back is possible with these requirements:

  • Each player can only use take backs up to 3 times.
  • Only one take back is possible for one move (For example only one take back on whites 5th move).
  • A take back is not possible if the opponent has no other legal moves
  • Both players need to make at least one move after this event starts before the first take back can happen.

Example 1:

Black tries to play Nxh5. If both players have made at least one move after the event started, then white can take back that move. White chooses to do so. Black takes back the move and must make a different move. Black plays d5. White has 2 takebacks left, but white can not take back d5 since he has already taken back a move once on this move.

Example 2:

Black plays Kxf7. Despite white having 2 take backs left, he cannot take back blacks move since black has no legal move other than Kxf7.

Well that’s some good timing

One whole move? I make a move ry does, then when I make a move he can take it back?
Avatar of Martin0

You make a move, then ry makes a move and then you can take back ry's move.

Exactly. It is just a bit milder.

You can not takeback a king capture. You are not allowed to leave yourself in check regardless if you have takebacks or not. That is why there is only one legal move in the second example.

you can take back a king capture if the king is capturing a piece not threatening the king though, right?

correct. King moves, like the king capturing something can be taken back.
