I don't consider checkers a variation of chess.

Teary's favorite variation is, oddly enough, one that not many people have heard of:

Alice Chess

Chess is a variation of checkers - just flip the board upside-down.

This only works in the Netherlands, and most readers will not even realize what you mean. To them Checkers is a Draughts variant played on an 8x8 board, and when they look on the back of their Chess board, it will just be blank wood.  Only on the back of Dutch Chess boards there will typically be a 10x10 board.

I agree that Checkers is not a Chess variant, btw.

I'd have to go with Ultima (a.k.a. "baroque chess"). I wonder whether anyone here has heard of it...
