Does anyone know how to set up the chess board and play Fischer Random chess? If so, how? And would playing a chess variation help my regular chess game and thought process?

Well, I've played 6 games now in a tournament Im currently in. I'm waiting for the 2nd round of quads to start. From what I've noticed it obviously takes away all openings anyone is used to. Secondly, it seems most games tend to spend the first half of the game trying to steer the game into positions they're used to and comfortable with. But you still need to follow normal chess fundamentals. Its fun. I'm looking forward to different starting positions. Everyone is given a position to start with you don't pick your own

Interesting. Good luck with your tourney!

The question of whether playing Fischer Random/Chess 960 will help your regular game is yes, in the long term, to the extent that you play seriously.  Playing seriously is playing one's best and never playing just hoping the opponent will make a mistake!!  If one plays seriously, then one will have a chance to improve one's thought process with creativity and problem-solving in unique situations.

Starting from the opening positions, the challenge for serious players is to not let tactical considerations distract from the need to apply the principles of opening play. When two players concentrate on tactics and disregard the opening principles, they are not playing serious chess, as each is hoping the other will make a mistake!  And that's okay, too, if you just want to have fun ... but to learn, you do better by playing seriously.
