Grand chess starting position. The marshal and cardinal are to the right of White's king.

Grand chess is a popular[1] large-board chess variant invented by Dutch games designer Christian Freeling in 1984.[2]

I was wondering about the game play experience, or anything you would be interested in sharing.

This seems like it would be a really good variant to play. It seems you could experiment a bit more with tactics or positional play than usual. The possibilities are mind blowing for me.

I tried to purchase those pieces and board but it was super expensive.  A 10 by 10 board was priced at like $600 or so and the prices of the pieces were pretty inflated too.  Seems like only specialty manufacutures carry those styles and they charge and arm and a leg.

I could probably make a good board, like I did in high school with a regular board. I cut strips of maple and walnut, then glued them together, alternating them. I cut across the glued strips perpendicular to how I glued them, to form new strips that could be flipped opposite of each other, to create the chess board pattern. I framed it in walnut.

I could get two sets of pieces and alter one sets' knights into the marshalls and cardinals, by glueing an addition base piece for each set respectively. I would probably even mark them so I know what they are. I think it could take a while to get used to recognizing the new pieces , even if marked, how the new pieces move for tactics and strategy, as well as the new pawn promotion rules. All in all, it seems like an awesome game for someone who loves chess.

It's even easier than that for the board. You can buy vinyl very similar to the vinyl used for tournament boards in a fabric store. Then get some broad tip permanent markers and a ruler, and draw the board on the vinyl. I made a hexagonal board and a 10x8 board that way (I already had a 10x10 from getting Omega chess).

Of course if you have the Omega Chess set you can just use that board and the extra pieces that come with it. Or if you make your own board you can get Seirawan Chess pieces from House of Staunton and use those.

Very interesting, one could make their own board and buy a couple cardboard boards along with it's pieces (duplicating this easliy).

I wonder how long a game of this would last?

If played with similar time controls to the WCC times, then maybe days. Set a clock, it could be over in 10 minutes.

Do you think Chess.Com should branch out into this type of games?

more popular variants like live 960 should take priority.

maybe eventually, but considering it isnt so major i dont think chess com will seriously look into it for a while

Yeah get more people to become accustomed to this would help.

Where I live 10x10 boards usually come for free, as they are on the backside of almost every 8x8 Chess board. If you want a dedicated 10x10 board, these are for sale at the web shop of the Dutch Draughts Association, for as little as € 8.50 ( http://shop.kndb.nl/damartikelen.html ). The more classy wood-inlayed boards cost as little as € 27.50.

Reasonably priced exotic wooden pieces can be obtained from the Superchess website ( http://www.superchess.nl/indexengels.htm ). E.g. the piece set on the image below (for black + white, 16 pieces in total) costs € 39.95. It can be obtained together with a matching standard Chess set for an extra € 40. As already mentioned above, if you like plastic pieces, the Seirawan Hawk & Elephant are a good choice.

I have watched many games of Grand Chess being played between computers, and it indeed is an entertaining and exciting game (comparable to Capablanca / Gothic Chess).

Some Superchess pieces (up to 85mm tall)

I would certainly play it if were available here. I can't say from my own bias that it should be part of this site. I were chess.com, I would probably do polls periodically to see what people want, what they are willing to pay for and then make it happen.

As a premium member, I think having live 960 and the major chess variants would be well worth the membership each time. If I found another site on the web that offered those things in addition to what I am getting, I'd be a new member for sure and perhaps not renew here.

Yeah, they should definitely add it to this site.  It would make life a lot more interesting.

I agree!

The couple of years ago I  want a coffee chess and I was just really interested in trying to learn how to play. Is there a sign that is decent easy to get into or in chest.com that supports the game?    Preferably one that is in Russian. I am stupid I only speak English.

That didn't come out right. I am sorry. A couple of years ago I bought a Gothic chess set. And I am really interested in trying to learn how to play it.    Does chess.com have a site where they playing this game too?
