Grasshopper Chess (game: cobra91 - vickalan)

I don't see anything obvious that we both missed, except that a piece seems to be captured almost every move. After move 8, seven pieces captured (almost 1 per move)!

By my count, it was 8 pieces captured after 8 moves (exactly 1 per move), but what I meant was that the variation we've entered is definitely leading to a serious advantage for one side. I'm just not certain which side is coming out ahead, at the moment.

On an unrelated note, I prefer to use '+' in place of "check", as in standard algebraic notation:  9. Qxe6+

I think it's funny too. To me it's like a short-little fun game you play in between your more serious games. But it's not lacking in strategy. The grasshoppers jump over other pieces to move or capture (capturing the piece behind). Things change quickly. The board starts with 6 of 8 ranks filled with pieces!

How can you detect one side has a big advantage, but you can't tell which side? You must know some theory I don't know about. To me, you've taken a slight lead. But things can change quickly in this game (speaking as grasshopper non-expert).

You're right - I've now taken a slight lead. 9...Be7 was a far more testing response, however, and was what I'd expected you to play. After 9...Be7, play becomes very sharp, and I know from experience that in Grasshopper Chess, one side invariably emerges from such positions with a significant advantage (and often a decisive one). Naturally, the resulting tactics were too complicated for me to reliably assess who would come out ahead, though.

Your Qe7 move is much "safer"... for both of us. Laughing

My next move is forced:  10. Qxe7+

vickalan

Your last move wasn't absolutely forced, but I guess you can call it forced so you know for sure my queen will never attack your pieces!

Actually, looking a bit closer at this, Black may already be in serious trouble...

I definitely don't have the momentum in this game.sad.png
I don't see big imminent trouble, but being 4 pawns behind is not good.

The grasshopper jumps over pieces, and lands behind it on the very next square. It also captures this way. If there is no piece to hop over, it cannot move. I thought I understood it pretty well, but I got behind in this game so far (but if I can capture one main piece I'll catch up).happy.png

A rare scenario in which both coordinates for the square of origin must be included in order to avoid all ambiguity.

You still have too many grasshoppers (all I can capture now is a pawn)...

This is getting precarious for both sides, now... as is typical in Grasshopper Chess.

I'll try:  16. Nf4

and will have to hope for the best!
