New Chess Variant... Actually, More Like A Variant Of A Variant

Sort:
Chess_Kirby

Since Bulldog Chess got a 4-player variant, why not give Infinite Chess a 4-player variant?

It's already a 'big' board, so the pieces can fit.

hitthepin
Wow... I’d try that.
vickalan

So cool! I'll play!😍

vickalan

Unless we simplify (and I don't think we should) this means the game will have about 150 pieces total. But there needs to be enough power to create dynamics and ensure there is mating potential - even enough to attack two kings.

There's a lot of rules and graphics we need to make. Instead of the pawns all marching inward (4 directions) how about just North-South like this:

null

Not saying this is the best setup - just an idea for one possible layout. What else do we need to decide to get ready?

Chess_Kirby

That's a great layout!

Chess_Kirby

We'd also have to know which pieces and piece combinations can checkmate.

hitthepin
I’m pretty sure I wrote down all the insufficient material situations in the tournament summary, but I’ll repeat it here.
hitthepin
KvK, KBvK, KNvK, KRvK, KCvK, KHvK, KGvK, KQvK, KNNvK, KBNvK, KBBvK, KRNvK, KRBvK, KPvK.
hitthepin
Of course not counting situations when both sides have material. ie, KRv KG.
McGoohan
I would like to try that too!
vickalan

McGoohan is in! This is going to be awesome.happy.png

A few more details before we start (let me know if any comments):

I moved the the center jager units in a little, so they are all complete. See below.

Also, we need to colorize the pieces, but let's wait before doing that. I'm re-doing all graphics for infinite chess so it's easier to "stitch" boards together (you can't see the difference, but helps when combining two boards).

Also, we need to make the win condition. In four-player bulldog one checkmate is a win. (at the end, both kings are standing but only one is checkmated).

I think here we should make the battle more complete. A team only wins when one of the opponent's kings is captured, and the other is checkmated.

Kings still cannot be left in check, or placed into check (so they can't be used for exchanges). The first chekmated king is subject to capture (and removed from board). Then the lone surviving king must be checkmated. 😈This game is going to the end!😈. Does that sound ok?

We should allow for about a week to finalize the graphics and add the four colors.null

Chess_Kirby

I'll add the colors like I did in 4-player bulldog

Chess_Kirby

I just thought of an idea for teams only.

Instead of each player having their own set of pieces, they share the team's set. For example, if someone on the white team uses the right pieces, they can also move the ones on the left and vice versa.

For Free-for-all, It would make sense for All teams facing the middle. (North, South, East, and West.) What do you think?

hitthepin
Yes.
hitthepin
So if we follow vickalan’s suggestion, what happens after one king is captured? Does his teammate take control of his pieces?
Chess_Kirby

Yeah, That's Right. And since teams SHARE pieces, We can keep them Black and White. I'll still need to color the pieces for free-for-all.

Chess_Kirby

Since Teams Share Pieces, We'll Have To Discuss New Castling Rules, Since There Are 4 Rooks.

How's This:

  1. When A King Castles With A Rook In 'His/Her Set,' It's The Typical 3 Squares.
  2. If A King Castles With A Farther Rook (But Not The Farthest,), He Castles 4 Squares.
  3. If A King Castles With The Farthest Rook (Somehow), Then He Castles 10 Squares. (The King And Farthest Rook Are 19 Squares Apart. 19 / 2 = 9.5. King Is On Tenth, Rook Is On Ninth)

Notation:

  1. Castle Short: O-O
  2. Castle Long: O-O-O
  3. Castle Longer: O-O-O-O
  4. Castle Longest: O-O-O-O-O [Optional: Add gold.pngtrophies.pnggold.png For Being Able To Castle Longest]
vickalan

Thanks Luke_Hands. Here's the piece-graphics I normally use for infinite chess.

Currently the infinite chess games don't have castling, but we can add that. I think it's a good idea for 4-player.

I need to think about the idea of moving your teammate's pieces. Wouldn't that be like a chess game where players just take turns moving pieces of the same army? I'm a little busy now, but I'll come back later.happy.png

Chess_Kirby

Ok, Scrap The "Moving Teammates' pieces," but let's keep the castling.

vickalan

I agree - I would like to add castling to this 4-player version of infinite chess.

Chess has the "quirky" rule of castling, and it would be fun to have it here too. When it happens within one army, here is the diagram how do it. The king moves 3 or 4 squares as you recommend. All intermediate squares need to be empty, and the rook finishes next to the king.

When castling with the teammate's rook, do you think all the intermediate squares need to be empty? That would be a fun maneuver because it would be one of the only moves where you move both your piece, and your teammate's piece in one turn. I like the idea, but just need to decided the rules for it.
