Omega chess, along with a great many other variants, can be played for free on Game Courier, a non-commercial website.

I've tried to access the site, registration, download zip, extract but absolutely nothing goes.

Avatar of agentofchaos

The link still seems to work for me.

Avatar of eppopop

The link still works, the extracting doesn't work, nor does anything else what is supposed to happen. Anyways, with the difficulty the site is set up I don't think many people will use it, it is almost like going back to vic 20. Register here, gofirm there, download this, copy there, extract so and so etc etc. I just got bored and annoyed at the same time. It just aint a web-site for 2011.

What is omega chess?

Avatar of PrawnEatsPrawn

I came in looking for a source of fatty acids but leave hungry and disappointed.

Avatar of eppopop

I am sure you'llfind your fatty acids down the road.

Omega Chess is like chess but then with extra pieces, new ones that move different and with a few new rules and possibilites.

It is hard to get people to play it, it's even hard buy the board game itself.

I have an Omega chess set.

Where did you get it?

I developed a webpage that implements a very basic turn-based server for board games. Registration consists of only entering a name and a password (and clicking an Add Player button), which prvents others (who do not know the password) to play moves for you.As for playing, it just implements board and pieces as if the were 'woodware', so you can move them around anyway you want before pressing Play Move to transfer the turn to your opponent. (So to castle you need to explicitly move King and Rook, etc.) As a result it can basically play any game played on a board of squares, provided image files are at hand for representing the pieces.

I set it up for Seirawan Chess at http://hgm.nubati.net/schess/play.html , and I was experimenting with a version for Chu Shogi at http://hgm.nubati.net/chu/play.html .

If there is any interest, I could make one for Omega Chess too. It is just a matter of changing the table of images that defines the board to the required board size, and supplying a file with the list of image files that fill the table cells in the initial position.

I never can remember how the wizard moves ...

Like an elongated knight yet still somehow different. Nah, I won't get into it.

The problem with variants with so many pieces is that the average game usually lasts very long. Chu Shogi also suffers from this. In addition the game seems a bit 'top-heavy'. There are many new Queen-class pieces, but only two Knights as extra minors. Even the Guard is a quite strong piece (~7).

My guess is that the game would be better if the Guards were replaced by lighter pieces, like Commoners (N(1), like King), Woody Rooks (O(1) + jumping O(2)) or Crowned Bishops (D + O(1)). That would create much more room for unequal trading of material, and thus interesting material imbalances.

Not sure but I probably ordered it via amazon or a chess equipment dealer or something else.

Avatar of eppopop

Amazon out of stock and unlikely it'll come back.

I'm gonna make a board myself and use figures from various chess sets, extra figures from toy shops and paint the lot. shouldn't be too difficult.

Avatar of HGMuller

At superschaak.nl they sell reasonably priced wooden pieces that fit well with other Staunton pieces. I always use those when I need unorthodox pieces for Chess variants. For example:

Boards for international draughts provide excellent 10x10 boards, and can be obtained from the Dutch Draughts Association ( http://shop.kndb.nl/damartikelen.html )

Woody Rooks is a nice idea! We can play such variant by correspondence there or at own topic! Make your first move!
