Good to know.
"fog of war" chess variation
What if the person actually "remembers" where the pieces are?
Memory is overrated.
What's this thread about?

You can only know what's quoted in this thread. It's a variation of a real thread.
At itsyourmove.com (no live games by the way) I think they have at least a dozen chess variants. One of them is like what you describe here. You only see the squares that are occupied by your pieces or squares your pieces attack. You can win the game by capturing the opponent's king (he may not see it's under attack of course).
Another variant I found entertaining was suicide chess. Before the game starts you select a piece or pawn that can, for it's turn, "explode." (This is hidden from your opponent). It behaves as a normal piece but when it "explodes" it's removed and all pieces on adjacent squares are removed (friendly or not). If the selected piece is captured then it is removed from the game normally.
it isn t "blindfold", just a variation. a lot of pre-computer military wargames employed the same principle of an umpire ( in this instance, the site) who sees everything while the 2 players must work (skillfully) with limited information.

Scheming Mind has several variants like that. One of the popular ones is Crazy House with visibility rules like that.
This variant is known as DarkChess. You see only the squares that you could move to. In KriegSpiel you would not see any opponent pieces) and you would also not be told his moves, of course, so there is nothing to remember)
Hello,
A fog of war tournament is organisez at www.dragonheelslair.com
It's free to join the site and the tourny.
The winner of the tournaments gets credits to buy a full membership.
an online site would be perfect to facilitate a chess variation where each player only knows the location of his opponents pieces if those pieces are adjacent to his own, or have captured one of his own or are putting him in check.
