Let's not hope for new editions. When we keep changing a game, especially when it has worked very well for more than a few people, it will gradually become depreciated and devalued. We don't want this, so I encourage us to keep it the way it is; at least for a lengthy while.

Vickalan, do you accept my challenge? =)

Do you mean a challenge to play the game (against you), or a challenge to not hope for new editions?
In the current edition I don't understand the wiseman, or why he is so weak if the advisor can promote to him. So I do hope for a new edition (if I play it). Not sure if you're interested but the wiseman jumps 2 squares O and D directions. So it is color-bound, and bound to only even ranks and files. It's very weak, so I don't know why anything would want to promote into it (there's no wisemen at the start of the game).
So I am waiting to see the rules for the new edition, and I might want to play the gamehappy.png.
I see you also have a large format game too (Titans). Has it worked well and any comments on how it plays? I guess I'll ask on that thread so we don't mix topics here (waterloo). I like studying these big format variants but haven't played any yet.

Well, as far as my own variant goes: it hasn't had its first game yet. IvanK volunteered to be the first participant for it, only to withdraw his commitment. He stated that the game is "too complicated". Really, the rules of the pieces are simple enough. I'm guessing he simply didn't like the new ideas I presented, as he wanted to go on things that were more familiar to him. More power to him.

I played a game of his variant against him; he couldn't return the favor. Life moves on.

But no more about my variant; you can talk about that in the thread designate for its discussion; though, it looks like you already got there.

I was merely challenging you to a game of Waterloo, 4th edition. Do you accept?

If you do, Black or White? =)

Hi BattleChess,
I'd like to play some chess variant against you, but I really feel Waterloo 4th edition has some (minor) problems I would like to see adjusted before playing a game. (Please see 7 items I listed above, and Ivan's answers)
Either way, my biggest concern is the Wisemen. If I go to the Waterloo blogsite (here) it says "The wiseman moves by JO or JD modes" and "jumping mode JO or JD means that a piece can jump with own move over exactly one other piece." Is that his only movement, and nothing else?  Is it a 2 square jump or is more allowed?

I look forward to playing some game with you, but I hope we can find some agreement on the minor details firsthappy.png

Attention! JO and JD means that a piece  (Wiseman) can jump over exactly one other piece but at any distance: 2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9 squares. JO(2) and JD(2) means a 2 square jump.

WATERLOO 2017

was announced exclusively for 5th edition of game.

But you have right to play any variation of Waterloo.

In other words, the Wiseman has an infinite range, and he can perform leaping within his +2 range but can only slide beyond that?

See, I'm a bit confused myself.

Thanks Ivan for making the rules about the wiseman more clear. Now I understand!happy.png

And, thanks for letting us play the 4th edition or older editions too. But I only have time to play one game of Waterloo, so I will wait for the 5th editionhappy.png

Would that be black or White? =)

You may play white. I'll play black.

Do you want to wait for the 5th edition, or play the current 4th edition?

Which one of us will update the board image after each move? If we play with classical pieces (such as I posted at comment #328) I will be happy to do it. If you want to play with the icons created by Ivan (with the guard that look like a face, and the advisor that looks like a nurse) then I would prefer if you could update the images.
We'll start a new thread for the game as soon as the basics have been established.
Happy New Year to all!happy.png

You stated that you want to play the newer 5th edition. Why don't we do that.

GAH!! Why am I always on White? xD

It doesn't matter. Just saying.

I'll host the game and post diagrams. All you have to do is note the move.

Avatar of vickalan

OK thanks. I have a few (minor) questions about a few things in Waterloo, but I'll wait until the new version is released. The instructions may answer my questions, or my questions may become irrelevant. Will be fun!happy.png

Absolutely will be fun. grin.png Indeed.

Hi Ivan, Happy New Year!

I have just three questions:

1) In castling, does the king move 3 or 4 squares or is both allowed? (need answer for both castling to the player's left and right).
2) Does anything happen if a pawn reaches the 9th or 10th rank?
3) When a third pawn reaches the eighth row, all own pawns move by N(1) mode. Do they also capture by N(1) mode?

I would like to register to enter the International World Championship. Do I choose my own opponent, or do I need to wait for other entries and then you decide players?

BattleChess and I are ready to begin a game soon!

The King for both castllings always move only 3 square (jump over own Marshall and Rook).
2) Does anything happen if a pawn reaches the 9th or 10th rank?
Nothing! Two promotions to spy with next possible promotion of spy are enough. Do you understand that pawns reached the 9-10th ranks move like the king?
3) When a third pawn reaches the eighth row, all own pawns move by N(1) mode. Do they also capture by N(1) mode?
Yes, of course! They are identical by own power to the king.

To choose opponent is very good knightly tradition!
