Both are excellent players. I have to say, though, that I can take or leave either.
I think MVL is the most likeable in the world.
But my favorite of all time is Yermo.

How do so many chess players think Hikaru is better than Magnus at chess?
Magnus is a former 5-time World Champion. Hikaru has never been WC. You can't even try to argue Hikaru's better at blitz, since Magnus is a 6-time Blitz World Champion, while Hikaru has again never been the Blitz WC either.
You can also look at Magnus's record vs Hikaru. In classical chess it is:
14W, 1L, 25D, Magnus's favor
If you include rapid and other time controls, their record is:
87W, 37L, 114D, Magnus's favor
And finally, you can look at where they're ranked right now:
Notice how Magnus is higher in every time control.
