Thank You Batgirl!

The match was the first one i followed after getting into chess.  All those pictures bring back memories.  Considering what Korchnoi had to put up with in this match, his wife and son, and still coming so close to the title.

Thee_Ghostess_Lola

was this the match where viktor didnt know how to castle ?...lol !!

@batgirl, You certainly have been busy lately. That was an interesting read. I have Raymond Keene's book "The World Chess Championship - Korchnoi vs. Karpov", although it's been some time since I went through it. I remember reading about many of the occurances in your post. I'll try find time to go through it again to see if I can find any relevant tidbits. Thanks

In his CL&R articles, GM Keene portrays himself as the hero who saved the day.. or almost so at any rate...and goes to great lengths to give that impression.

GM Kasparov isn't kindly disposed to GM Keene and portrays him as someone talking out of both sides of his mouth, seeming to be acting in Korchnoi's best interest but really having some other agenda.
Who knows?

I've read things similar to GM Kasparov's opinion, mostly in reviews of his multitude of books. I don't know enough about the man to have formed a personal opinion, though.

TheBestBeer_Root

Some career you got there, batgirl! 👍

TheBestBeer_Root

Just how many Books have you published, gal?

I've spoken to him on several occasions. He seems nice enough, though he doesn't like being contradicted.  Of course, my opinion of him wouldn't be worth much anyway, so I go with what I read.

I had the good fortune of being among a number of club members, who took part in a simultaneous against Viktoria Korchnoi . He had just finished playing in the Hastings International Tournament, and was on his way to my home town as part of his agenda to earn extra money. It was an experience I shall never forget …….. btw I lost my game against him .
batgirl

Most interesting.
So, what was your impression of Korchnoi from the short encounter?

Woollensock2
I found him to be a really nice person, and very polite. He signed my game notation which I treasured for many years, until one day when I was in London for a tournament, I travelling on the underground to the tournament, and when I arrived at my destination, I realised that I’d left my notation book on the train , it was a big loss for me .

I think I remember I heard some folk say he won against Viktor Korchnoi in a simul... Anyway, quite an "evil-doer" And I remember well hearing about him during the cold War. It was quite clear what was going on from the newspapers articles. Quite puzzling too.

That's sad.

Thanks. That is a very perceptive, fair and honest review by Richard James who is always perceptive fair and honest.   I agree with him, the title is a bit absurd . . . I guess Gennady or his publisher feels he needs sensationalism to push sales.

I was an eight year old child, when I took part in that simultaneous with Korchnoi , and like I said he was very friendly and polite to me . He will always remain my favourite GM .
