Too funny. Not the history but the bantering. It's almost as entertaining as my all around bad chess moves that baffle even the simplest minded individuals. It is okay to insult myself without being banned isn't it?

atomichicken

This has now got to be enough evidence to get her banned straight away surely?

xFiredx

I think offensive comments should lead to a chat-ban.  A few days for first offence, and longer for each repeated offence.  This would appease the more easily offended, and it wouldn't interfere with the chess side.  Smile

i'd like to see a list like this about the USA.  we're spotless.  unless you count the stuff that "we" did tothe brits in the 1770s.

truth is, mine we're still brits back then.

Good idea. This is how they handle the problem on other sites. And it's what A.J. MacInerney would call a "proportional response".

What's the problem with giving outrageously offensive individuals one warning and then banning them?

TheGrobe

I see the [edited to remove abuse] tag, but what about [edited to remove political discussion]?

Kernicterus

USA...spotless?  haha.  I couldn't detect the sarcasm but I'll assume it was there.

Anyway...super turk girl...why are you talking about Armenian lies at Chess.com and why are you talking about Armenia and Azerbaijan to people who have nothing to do with this? It's really weird but funny.

Spiderman2351

Me personally.  I think people are entlted to there opionions.  If they want to cuss you out and say dirty things to you let them.  Its there right to free speech.  On the other hand the smart thing to do is block these people and ignore them.  I know that sounds stupid but trust me it works.  Also, you also have a choice to be here so if you cant take the heat or a few insults the mayve this isnt the place for you.  I think reporting people is pointless because half the time they'll just get off with some kind of warning.

ChessDweeb

It's only politics if you know what you are lying about.

A wise man once told me that understanding is the way we will heal.

Heal yourself by understanding that the internet (and the world that created it) is full of hurtful people who delight in spreading pain. But pain is only temporary, while dignity is forever.

Don't let pain indignate you.

Lost all respect for you after that. I can't believe someone of your intelligence truely believes that.

it's a joke dude.  i'm fully aware of the "truth" about this country i call home.

ilikeflags

the joke is--we ALL know the USA is far fvrom spotless.  but yanks have areputation for thinking themselves above...  etc.  etc.

Vance917

We need to define freedom of speech more clearly.  Freedom of speech is not necessarily the same as protected freedom of speech.  As in, anybody is free to steal, but then the state is free to incarcerate you if you do.  Anybody is free to insult, but others are free to ostracize you if you do.  It always comes down to consequences.  What are the consequences for exercising free speech in this case?  Not for me to decide!

ilikeflags

i guess, i had to clarify...  that makes me sad.

TheGrobe

I seriously don't think that the choice between one member's worth of advertizing revenue and the opportunity to proactively managing the tone of discourse on this site for the remainder of users is even close to a difficult one to make -- I'd imagine the economics even support the ejection of abusive users (others will leave if the problem is dealt with).

Spiderman2351

Wll again that was my opinion on that.  I personally classify what she said as Freedom of speech only because she has the right to say what she wants about the country.  But on the other hand  do agree that calling him a Baste, was wrong and was too far.

Well exactly flags! How was I supposed to know you weren't one of them! Have regained (most of) my respect for you now. Still awaiting turk girls response ;)

no way to know except that my claim was totally false.

TheGrobe

I'd defer to the folks running the site to make that decision -- they're accountable for the economics after all.
