Feature Request: "Active Players"

I really like the concept! :)

Looks like we're stuck with vanilla activity information for now.

I think it must be just me & you, artfizz..

Even though I gather that this isn't that hard of a feature to implement, and as  Chess.com has implemented a whole slew of much more involved features since I first made the suggestion in May of last year, it must not be high on their priority list.  It would certainly be helpful to know if it is even there at all.

it would certainly be nice to see "The list" as my OS, ubuntu has on their website, to know whats coming down the pipe.

Observe:

About "Active Players".

It could certainly be customized, facebook style, like with a checkbox saying "Don't tell others my activity level"..

We don't have the benefit of being in the same room with each other as we play.  It would be nice to know additional info about your opponent (give this info some value, make it available to paying members only)

Having said all this, it doesn't seem like there is a way to get feedback about suggestions or learn about upcoming features on this site. We seem to be all tooting our own horns for the sake of conversation.

If chess.com were a community effort in the same way that ubuntu is, then public tracking of milestones would be vital. Since, by contrast, it's a lean, one-man's-vision project, community participation is necessarily limited to dreaming up neat ideas, lobbing them over the fence and waiting to see whether any of them fly.

The older wishlists quickly became swamped with a complete mixture of suggestions and discussion. The revised scheme new-forum-category-for-suggestions has a lot going for it - in keeping a suggestion and its discussion together - but separate from other ideas.

Webmaster's blog and webmaster's Recent Activity list on his homepage contain announcements of new features. (This one is not there yet.)

Hey guys I've actually made a tool that can enable the essence of this request, but with a different implementation..

I wrote a Windows console app that will read the Chess.com RSS feed and (if you have Google Calendar), it will create a calendar event for when they move.

At the very least it should be able to read your own personal chess.com RSS feed and show you what times of day that your opponents are active.

Actually, as currently ALL the chess.com RSS feeds are public, so the program could be set to read *anyone else's* Chess.com RSS feed with it if you were looking for their activity level.

I figure if there is ever have a problem with this, Chess.com might want to use an encrypted hash for the name instead of http://www.chess.com/rss/echess/YourName

Anyway, The project is here:

http://code.google.com/p/chesscalendar/

Windows Download is here (you may have to instal .net framework 4.0, but it should give you a link if you need it)

http://code.google.com/p/chesscalendar/downloads/list

For screenshots, see my posting here:

Great suggestions  Kevin Gabbert ! And reading the colour coding ( or was it "colour kidding") was great fun. Maybe a symbol like the amount of power left in batteries symbol with some colour context would be easier to implement and evaluate ?

artfizz

I'm running it now. I'm impressed!

artfizz,

I'm currently working on a "taskbar-based" version of that app right now (I spend about 30 minutes a day on it so it may take me a little time).

I'll still make it so that you can see the log scroll if you want tho..

kevin, i must say that you look very dynamic and stoic in that photo! i imagine it was taken at the moment you came up with this idea. very good though. and someone said something about casual players...that makes me think of hen's teeth and unicorns...we are all addicted here! and those members who use this sight as a social networking medium should check out facebook or my space or something...

ZipJedi

actually, now that I think of it.. my app could very easily evaluate the "Activity Level" of one's opponents and display a color coding...
