Welcome to the 12 game championship format where not losing is all that matters.

Welcome to chess where drawing is preferable to working hard to give yourself a worse position just so the game carries on and fans wont moan.

Call it whatever you want. The fact is that trying to win is basically suicide now. I hope this one doesn't get dragged out into blitz but that's probably wishful thinking.

One short draw and chess is dead.

I don't think the game today was in any way bad. Carlsen played an unambitious opening, missed a subtelity and Anand punished him acordingly. You guys need to realise this is a victory for Anand, tomorrow if he gets a similairly good position as white he will press for a win. Right now the pressure is on Magnus to play better as white in game 3, if Anand equalizes easily out of every game where Magnus is white, Vishy will be the favorite to win.

Nice to see Anand dismissing the computer analysis. "The computer analysis showed Black as slightly better" - "Yes, well, the computer probably considers it slightly better just because Black has one piece slightly more advanced - doesn't mean I necessarily actually have anything tangible"

How many rating points will vishy get for the draw?

Hey guys, relax. There are another 11 games coming, and Carlsen isn´t Gelfand; there´s no way he´s going to go for an early draw tomorrow. He got 3 wins with Black in the Candidates and only 2 with White. Anand´s strategy of forcing an early draw was for him completely correct, he´s demoralised Carlsen already. But Carlsen´s a fighter, he´s going to be out for revenge tomorrow I think.

Yeah Anand did the smart thing but 16 move draws are just ridiculous. Theoretically they could both play that way and draw all 12 games since playing on would be "dangerous..."

they surely need to adopt sophia rules which i think prohibits draws befor move 40.

This was a farce tonight.  Very disappointing for chess fans.

I think there was plenty of play in this position, they should have continued.

Sophia rules wouldn't have helped in this case of repetition. It wasn't a farce, for them to play on you would be forcing one of them to play in a worse position, or one they weren't comftorable in. What are you going to do? Have an arbiter move a random piece? Short draws happen on occasion, we've seen them since we've started notating chess games. It's one game, try not to panic.

Only patzers are upset by drawn Master games.  Too much hyperbole over game 1......what did you expect?   Most WC matches start with a cagey first fight & there's a long way to go.

Qb3 was the only move perhaps, and Black was 'almost' in a kind of zugzwang I reckon.

I expected more moves, that's all. I mean if I'm a GM and don't want to lose does that mean I can play passive openings and force you to draw me since you'll never have anything tangible past move 16? This is a gross exaggeration but still...

That. I mean, if I play you , I'll just skip the passive openings and checkmate you in the first moves. This is a gross exaggeration, but still.

First game, back to sleep, zzzz.

It's an unrelated exaggeration as well...

Hey, heres a crazy idea: When you run out of "memorized" moves, you start playing chess!

Any respectable professional competition would not allow players/teams to just quit at halftime just because of a tied score and theier playbook is exausted.

The draw was forced in this game not agreed upon.

JohnnyKGB

the solution is give  0.65  points   when you draw with black .

Or perhaps better is "anand it's done", I dunno

Forced, agreed... same difference. Point is, this is not allowed in any other respectable professional competition.

Imagine watching an NFL superbowl game where the teams were tied at 0 and the coaches walk out to the middle of the field and say" hey buddy, im all out of plays". Other coach replies "me too, lets just call it a day!"

This isn't the NFL where draws are virtually impossible apart from extreme circumstances so the comparison doesn't work. Your problem is with the rules of chess lol...

This thread was more exciting than the game!Laughing There are going to be a lot of draws in this match, so if y'all are not prepared for it then you'll just be crabby for three weeks. Tension builds up after many draws as the first win becomes more important. And remember the candidates tournament, when the pressure was greatest towards the end of the tournament it was the first time really that we all saw Magnus Carlsen vulnerableWink
