Are Conditional Moves Offensive?

I use conditional moves, but I agree think that they can appear arrogant. I do a lot of the tactics trainers so I know how often a move can be forced (either because it's the only available move or because it's the only sensible move) but I wonder whether it's a little rude to use them.

I think it might be so because the user of conditional moves is essentially saying "I know what you're going to do before you do it."

What a funny thread. Even if it appeared arrogant to some, I'm not sure I care.

Conditional moves are a clear case of using extra sensory perception...making moves in the future in response to a move that hasn't even occurred yet. I love it. It also fits neatly with Silly String Theory.

I haven't checked the terms, is ESP disallowed on chess.com?

I bet some of you knew I was going to post this comment. I predict the next response will be..."nice one."

It's not fair.

Well, it's simple.

Most conditional moves are offensive, but some are defensive.

I think they are clever, how can you be offended at a feature. Love it if someones gets more than 2 on me. I'm made up if I get 1....whats that they say "simple things for simple minds" yup but I don't get offended at nothin :o))

i dont think it is offensive.

i dont think chess.com thinks its offensive...after all, they put in this feature.

players may do this anticipating moves, sometimes to save time when certain moves are obvious, or expecting a certain move...if it works good.

i have never used this feature, but it has been used on me on many occasionSmile

I am curious what reasons they have.

Some people are just easily offended.

Must we always satisfy everyone?

 I could not agree more!!!!

Sometimes they're quite pensive, at others (when I Queen sac) rather expensive, and they can be a bit complexive, but when I mate, it's where death lives.

I can think of one reason, and this actually happened in one of my games here.  To save time, I entered conditional moves in reply to all my opponent's legal moves.  Including my opponent's one horrible legal move.  He made that move, and was offended at the idea that I thought he would play so badly.  I explained to him that I teally didn't expect him to do so, but he didn't seem to believe me.  He was probably just upset with himself.

So, a new thread could be "is it offensive to enter conditional moves in response to opponent blunders?"

I could see how some would finf offensive .. as not a true enjoyable game / just turns into speed chess.   Why play the game?   Also if other player doesnt have premium membership he/she can’t do this

There's no point in trying not to offend people who want to be offended.

I understand how some may believe that conditionals may be slightly annoying, especially if your opponent is attempting to complete all daily games with a given time. I however do use conditionals in the beginning or correspondence games for openings and sometimes in certain parts of the game where the next move is obvious, such as recapturing a piece, or a forced mate. If anyone berate you for using conditionals, just ignore it and if it gets too personal or offensive, you can even report them for abuse and harrassment. So no, conditionals are perfectly fine in my book. happy.png

Those people are "offensive". It`s part of Chess; get over it.

Conditional moves are fine; they help me get through games where my opponent rarely makes moves.

If someone gets upset about conditional moves, then that sucks for them. But if someone is so prone to getting upset about small things, then perhaps the thing causing the trouble isn't the things they are getting upset about but their tendency to get upset so easily.
