Perhaps we should reconsider TheGrobe's statue of libertyations suggestion - but applied to avatar changes not posts: changing earlier posts may invalidate later comments - but changing avatars may mess up earlier dynamically linked pics.
Yes -- I'd noticed some time back that your new avatar undermined the original post in this topic but there wasn't anything I could do about it as I didn't have access to the old version.
As soon as I saw (after blackfirestorm666's post this morning) that it had been restored I quickly took the opportunity to change (and liberty of changing) the image in the original post from a dynamically linked one to a static link. Now you can change your avatar as much as you like -- the version linked on this topic will live on in infamy.
Given that this is the second post I've edited today outside of a 24 window from the original post I guess I have no choice but to concede the point on the drawbacks of restricting edits.
