What do you do in closed or cramped positions

Hello SacrifycedStoat, when you are cramped then trading off pieces is a good idea. In closed positions, manoeuvring pieces to the right squares often becomes key.

currently, I am 2250 and struggling to break 2400-2500+. I want to break that level someday, but keep losing to twomovers, How do GMs and IMs train for the game? Clearly playing blitz 24/7 is useless, but how do titled players use their extreme amount of time to train for the gam?e

Hello Sicilianswiftie, That is different for most. What I used to do was work on my weaknesses and especially openings as I kind of disliked studying them. I prefered to play logical openings over positions that are based on a lot of memorization. Yet, memorization is still important so I just did the work and that really helped.

I would highly recommend getting a coach. That is something many titled players still benefit from. A coach can give you perspective and can help you focus on your part that needs improving. I still have some slots left for new students. Check out my website if you are interested: chesscoachroeland.com.

Hello Jodok12, that depends on how you study. But when studying well then in 5 years, you could get very close to a title.

Hello, I have a question for you if you don't mind. Why is Nxd4 a bad move here? Against a Maroczy Bind, I thought you wanted to swap out pieces. Is it because it's worse that i activated the opponent's queen?
What imbalance should I keep into account in regards to this mistake?

Hello Sicilianswiftie, first and foremost chess is a concrete game. Grand idea's don't work if the tactics won't allow it. In your position Nxd4 wasn't good because of the tacticalities that followed. It was better to just play ...Nf6 and take a small disadvantage in space, even though (with one pair of pieces traded) you had enough space to manoeuvre.

do you recommend the kings indian defense for both black and white?

Depends on the level. I would say it's more for high level. In the beginner/amateur stages I would look for openings that adhere more to the golden rules in the opening.

A general question: After you develop openings you like to pay as black and as white,...

.....How often do you cycle through and study / refresh your memory of your openings?

This must depend on your tournament schedule and possible opponents. And also ...

.....What is a time efficient way to do it?

I know the answer is level dependent so will be different for you and us, but it would be helpful (to me) to hear your process and steal/adapt from it what seems to make sense for me.

Thanks-- Bill

Hello Bill, Usually I develop openings during tournaments or competitions. That way everything is fresh in my head. If you don't play that but play online most of the time, then it would be good to set some time apart to revisit some of the openings you have prepared for yourself. One or two hours a week for example. And a simple but convenient way is to check the openings that you played from your games. Just briefly as a reminder and addition to you preperation. The nice thing about this is that when you are playinga game, your brain is very active and therefore checking openings in combination with your games make them easier to remember. For example: I played a game 18 years ago against Magnus Carlsen. I still remember how that opening went to this day. Not just against famous players of course. I also remember my opening from a game I played 8 years ago against an IM for example.

Hope this helps, ChesscoachRoeland.com

Hello Josh11live, that depends on the new rating goal. It's much easier to get from 1100-1300 then to get to 2300-2500.

Hi! I have somewhat an interesting question please consider answer it,

So recently I came across playing bullet for a long time, I find it fun because it needs speed and not thinking but in bullet I am so fast at playing moves like really FAST my opponents always lose unless they checkmated me or I am low in time

So the question is, does playing moves incredibly fast in bullet gets your account banned for fair play?!

Also please consider checking my most bullet games, for deep analysis :]

Thanks
