I must have gotten lucky, because the first two greeter games I was in were finished. Only one continued in the site, though.
I did it for the first time recently, starting each one with hello and a short paragraph on where to find the analysis board and opening explorer and inviting questions. So far two time outs after 1 move, one shortly to time out after 2 moves, and 3 I aborted after no moves with timeout approaching. Only one person even responded hello back. I unchecked the greeter box.
At first I thought I would be over whelmed, "10 games at once". They all lost due to time - some never made the first move! Maybe they felt insulted after seeing my rating. LOL
Me too. I stopped being a greeter when someone typed some profanities in the message when I was trying to explain how to tell if someone is online.
It happens, most of the new people probably just don't even understand the difference between live chess and online chess and by the time they figure out they already have lost on time.. people shouldn't really be greeted by an automatically started game of chess but an invite or at least a different approach. s:
Edit: eh, lots of posts at same time.
Also, the first game usually don't really matters this much. You should focus on trying to answer questions/interact with players and guide them in the right direction if it's possible..
What's people's experience of being a Greeter? I've done it since the site first asked for Greeters. I only play 1 Greeter game at a time but I'm still disappointed by how few of my opponents finish the game (none so far) & continue to be members - I assume none, but maybe they just got sick of me & went on to join & play others on the site :-) I suspect not.
Are other Greeters more successful than me in completing their Greeter games? Do you have any hints on how to encourage people to join?
I try to be polite & friendly, I encourage them to try Live Chess though I warn them that they may suffer a disconnection & ask them a few moves in how they're doing on the site & are they enjoying it.
Maybe some advice from Greeter successes would help some of us to encourage others to stay.
