Bug Report -- Opening Explorer

Sort:
sholom90

I brought this up a couple of months ago, and it's happened again (with a different opening).

The position is this:

And Opening Explorer says this:

As you can see from the chess position up top, 7 Ne2 and 7 Nge2 are the same thing!  (The other knight can't move as it is pinned).

Can someone from chess.com tell me that somebody will look into this?  It's existed for a while now.

That position after 7.Ne2 is pretty equal for both sides. I don't believe that it is as much as 42% winning for White.

It has to do with transpositions and Explorer is only looking at the next position and the move made in those games does not necessarily follow the same move order, just that there are games in the database where that move was made and all other material is on the the same squares. If you look at one of the games from that particular position, you'll see what it's doing.

Short answer, Explorer is position dependent, not move dependent.

Actually, maybe it's something else with the Analysis Openings tab: Explorer is correct.

I confess to not understanding this.  Whether this *position* arises from transposition or not, the knight is pinned.

Secondly, are you saying that in this *position* that I should combine the Ne2 and Nge2 data?

And, as for your second post -- I see, but don't understand, the discrepancy.  Where did the Nge2 games go?

uhm yeah, there are 0 transpositions where nc3 isnt pinned by bb4 already

Most of the time when something like this shows up like that, it's a transposition and the way most databases handle a resulting position.

@sholom90 it took me a little bit to find out exactly where you were looking to see that. I don't use the Openings tab on game Analysis that often, so my image is directly from Explorer not that tab on analysis.

I was able to recreate the issue you saw and formally bug reported it after my second post.

@Martin_Stahl -- I sincerely appreciate the effort you put into to recreating the problem, and am happy that you formally reported it.

On my end, I was able to find out the last time I reported something similar (in May), at which time you and I had a similar conversation (except that you didn't recreate it and, afaik, did not report the bug).  See https://www.chess.com/forum/view/help-support/weirdness-bug-with-opening-explorer

Interestingly enough, while this thread (OP) comes from a French Defense game, the thread from May comes from a Nimzo-Indian game and the error was the same!  It was Ne2 and Nge2 when the other knight is pinned!

Re-upping.

1.  I reported the bug here (https://www.chess.com/forum/view/help-support/weirdness-bug-with-opening-explorer) in May

2.  Three months later I reported essentially the same bug at the top of this thread

3.  @Martin_Stahl said that he recreated it and formally reported it on August 4.

It's been seven months since I first reported it.  Thus, the "re-up"
