Catalonia is a Spanish region, not a country

I do not understand that Catalonia is an alternative when you choose country or nationality on the personal profile information because Catalonia is not a country. Catalonia is a region of Spain. Very simple, isn't it. Would it be acceptable that, i.e., Texas be an eligible country or nationality. Please, correct this malfunction asap. Thanks

It's sort if like British Columbia or Quebec in Canada. Both places have thier own identity compared to the rest of Canada. But in the case a Catalonia, they feel like they've been subjugated by Spain and would prefer to be their own country.

In the case of Quebec, they've voted on independence, but never got enough votes to break away from Canada.

In the case of British Columbia, it's just a regional identity. If you've ever lived in Texas, you'll understand what I mean by regional identity. There are all sorts of regional identities in America, but Texes is the only state where the regional idenity is the name of state.

Most other large poulation states only sorta have a state identity because different regions in those states either have a more localized identities or overlap larger regional identities.

Take NY for example. The area around NYC is a far cry from western NY area, which more aligns to the rust belt, and parts in the east of the Hudson river, but not too close to NYC would be closer to the New England region as far as regional identity.

I've seen people with the English flag (England), and others from the same place flying the United Kingdom flag.  It's interesting.  How about the "internationals"?  Yes, politics is everywhere.  I'm still waiting for my Northern California flag.

Flag of Jefferson

there should also be no flag for palestine or antartica.  neither are countries.

Why not? A flag doesn't have to represent a country. Boise State has a flag, and it's not a country. Personally I like the name of Jefferson for a state, or even a country.

This is why people still insist on killing each other. They let the colour of a piece of cloth, colour their judgement . . .

I dont think a flag has anything to do with that. Chess.com has all kinds of options for flags to help people identify where they are from or what they like. I think the killing has more to do with other people trying to take your stuff, not the color of a flag.

It was an actual proposed flag.  Jefferson State has been proposed since 1941 so I wouldn't get to worried about it.

Micah57

Yeah, they voted down the State of Jefferson just last year....again.  As for Catalonia, isn't there a movement to break away from Spain for economic reasons?  I vaguely remember reading something about that.

If that is chess.com policy, then the OP has a valid point.  UN does not recognize Catalonia.

Micah57

Yeah, that's what I was thinking too.  Catalonia is not a separate country.

Flags are meaningless, so it doesn't matter whether chess.com puts up any flag or emoji they want to,  Put up a Narnia flag...who cares? Are any of you playing on an Olympiad team?  Representing your country in any official capacity?  No?  Then your chosen flag here means nothing.  They are no more worthwhile than the flairs just implemented, and honestly, all the flags here do is serve to give people more reasons to put down or discriminate against one another.

btickler is right.   Does the UN recognize Narnia?  grin.png

When Norway was a part of Sweden (1814 - 1905), the Norwegians protested in the same way. They made their own flag. Now the Catalonians protest with their flag. We should applaud it.

Flags aren't meaningless, since they help establish territory. But for here, I agree they are meaningless. Providing a large selection of flags is one of the few things chess.com got right. It helps people identify where they are from or what they like. I also agree often people just use that identification to put down or discriminate. We are people, that's what we do. We always like to root for the home team.

OK, you guys have convinced me - I'm going on a world tour, "A to Z". Should be fun. No set time frame. Whenever I feel like it, I'll move up one. happy.png
